Wasteland

was a short film I made for the Charlie Awards Film Festival in 2003. It took me about 3 months in total from start to finish, and in the end I came in 1st place. It starred Sean McKinley, and it featured a simple plot about how he had to somehow defeat a group of robotic aliens that had taken over the Earth. It was not only my directing debut, but also the first film I had made that merged 3d animation with 2d video footage.

The original running time was around 00:12:30.

I was pretty proud of it when I first completed it, but now when I look back I can't help myself from laughing at how cheesy it is. So, please understand that I realize how poor the modelling and texturing is!

***Note: Wasteland is now available for download! You can get it here! BUT...it's around 60 megs, and since I made it in 2002 when I was just beginning to dabble in animation and special effects it's terrible (no joking), so don't waste your time unless you REALLY want to see it! (ie, it's here for nostalgic purposes only!)

Here are some models from the film:
This is a walking "destroyer". In the movie, Sean is shot in the hand and wounded by one of these.
Here is a textured destroyer.
This is a drone. In the movie, several of these are sent to find Sean after a probe discovers his location.
This is a textured version of the drone.
This probe is what originally discovers Sean's location in the film, and even though Sean is able to destroy it, it is too late because the probe had already sent notification of his whereabouts to the other robots.
A textured probe.
There is a scene where a couple of these droids wreak havok on some houses, but Sean never comes in direct contact with any of them.
Here is a still of the factory that never made it into the final movie.
Although this picture makes it appear small, this "main reactor" for the robots is approximately 1-2 miles high.
Near the beginning of the movie, several of these motherships appear in the sky along with all of the other robots. The invasion has begun!
This funny looking fellow is a flying robot that blows up some houses near the film's start.
Here are some stills directly from the movie itself (in no particular order):
Sean: the lone robo killa! Oh no! A drone is coming! Good thing it doesn't see you.
....It still doesn't see you. ....this isn't a very observant drone.... This probe looks angry!
Hit it with the stick! Hit it with the stick! Woah...that's a big building...but I'm sean! I'll destroy it! A direct hit!

Down it tumbles. Now the robots have no power supply!
